in modern world we all need a word that should be kept in secret and will be used as a access key for accessing variety of services in digital or non-digital world. it may be your online bank account, email account or your credit/debit card PIN number, we all need that secret key to access all these services.
here we will try to create/generate a password or passkey with the combination from our daily access goods or things. lets say, your wrist watch’s (u always wear it while going out) company name and your driving license number which goes something like LA34A22 or your house number, say 191-BC Sample Street. a good password should contain atleast 8 character combination of alphabets (upper/lower case), digits, punctuation etc. it would be even better if every character of your password is a different character itself not matching with each other.
ok, we discussed much about it and now lets get on to the business. here we will create a 8 (eight) character long password/passkey contains 8 different character which should be easy to remember. the password will be contain my house number is 82, my PAN card number starts with AK, i born on 1st september and other characters like # (hash), @ (attherate), > (greater-than) or ~ (tild).
1st and 2nd character: aK (notice the ‘K’ is in upper case)
3rd, 4th and 5th character: # and 82
6th and 7th character: > and ~
8th character: 1
so the password we create is aK#82>~1. you could ask why cant the password goes like ~1KA@28> or ak@82>4~ etc. believe me, there is a scientific reason behind it. one reason is, we always like to remember rhythmic words or combination of words, digits etc which sounds rhythmic to us. that’s why we can easily remember the whole 200 words lyrics of a song even after 50 years exactly same as we heard it 50 year back. so when it comes to creating a password or secret key, it will be great if u can add a rhythm behind it. that’s why i create the above password/secret key keeping the rhythm in mind. the above password should be pronounced like this: ake-hasheightytwo-greaterthan-tildone. now, it may not be sounds rhythmic to you, don’t worry. you can always easily create a password which sounds rhythmic to you which will be safe & secure. the above password/secret key just a example. passwords can be sometimes not just hard but impossible to remember. those password/secret key should not be used for your regular purpose like ur bank account or email password, those password/secret key only should be used only in high security zones like defense security computers etc.
some Do’s and Dont’s to follow while creating your secret key:
Always Do:
1. an acceptable password must have at least five (6) different characters. repeated characters can make for palindromes and make it easier to crack.
2. an acceptable password must have characters from at least three (3) different character types — upper case, lower case, digits, punctuation, etc. a password that includes a sample from a rich character set is difficult to crack.
3. an acceptable password must not have an alphabetic sequence any longer than three (3) characters.
4. an acceptable password must not have a digit sequence any longer than two (2) characters.
5. there are a few characters that will cause problems if used in a password - the “delete” character is one of the obvious ones.
6. one possible method for picking a good password is to make up your own acronym.
7. change passwords at least once every 60 (sixty) days. if possible every after 15 days.
8. enter your user-id and password only in the space provided for- that you are normally used to.
Do Not:
1. Passwords should not be any of the following:
a. dictionary words (including foreign and technical dictionaries)
b. name of a person or a thing, a place, a proper noun, a phone number or a vehicle number
c. simple pattern of letters on keyboards
d. any of the above reversed or concatenated
2. store passwords in a file on ANY computer system (including Palm Pilots or similar devices) without encryption (atleast 128 bit).
3. let your computer remember your password. do not accept auto complete option provided by your computer/ browser.
4. use un-trusted system to access a sensitive service. If you must, change the password on the first occasion immediately thereafter from a trusted system.
5. share your password/secret key, it’s a security risk. do not divulge your password to any one.
6. write down your password: one should never write down a password. someone may discover the password. make the password difficult for others to guess or crack but easy for you to memorise and remember.
more updates to come, keep visiting.
